How Long Has EDI Been Going On?
EDI did not begin with ChatGPT. ChatGPT made it visible.
The short answer
EDI did not start all at once. It accumulated. The internet has always had EDI-like ingredients: linking, indexing, ranking, copying, circulation, reputation, collective editing, recommendation, commerce, and machine-readable metadata. Large language models created the sharp phase transition because they coupled those older layers to recursive synthesis at public scale.
Why this question matters
“How long has this been going on?” is one of the first serious questions people ask once they understand EDI. The answer cannot be reduced to “since ChatGPT.” ChatGPT is a turning point, but the underlying architecture was assembled over decades.
The LLM era is not the beginning of the story. It is the moment the earlier layers lock together.
The layered timeline
| Era | What changed | EDI layer added |
|---|---|---|
| 1989–1993 · Linked Web | The web made documents point to one another. | Linked artifacts. |
| 1998 · Ranked Web | Google and PageRank turned links into authority signals. | Machine-ranked visibility. |
| 1999–2001 · Dynamic Knowledge | RSS and Wikipedia made public knowledge updateable. | Collective canonicalization. |
| 1998–2003 · Recommender Commerce | Amazon recommendations and Marketplace made behavior actionable. | Transactional artifact formation. |
| 2004–2007 · Feed Web | Social feeds turned attention into infrastructure. | Feed-mediated reality. |
| 2005–2010s · Audiovisual Artifacts | YouTube made public knowledge audiovisual and recommendation-shaped. | Audiovisual artifact formation. |
| 2007–2011 · Web as Training Substrate | Common Crawl and web-scale datasets made the web machine-consumable. | Web-as-training-corpus. |
| 2011–2020 · Semantic / Entity Web | Schema.org, knowledge graphs, snippets, and entity search structured meaning. | Entity formation. |
| 2017–2022 · Transformer / ChatGPT threshold | Transformers and public chat interfaces made recursive synthesis ordinary. | Mass human–AI ideation. |
| 2023–present · Generative / Transactional Web | Generative search and AI seller tools turn language into summaries, videos, posts, and listings. | Recursive artifact acceleration. |
Closing formulation
EDI did not begin all at once. It accumulated: the web gave information links; search gave links authority; social platforms gave attention a feed; metadata and knowledge graphs gave machines entities; web-scale crawls gave AI a memory substrate; LLMs gave the public recursive synthesis; generative search gave synthesis the appearance of retrieval; and marketplaces gave some artifacts transactional form.
That stack is what makes the internet feel less like a library and more like a living, generative information ecosystem.
